Young Knives are back with something that feels equal parts weird and wonderful: ‘Cause & Effect’, a new track from their upcoming album Landfill, out on 24th January 2025. The song, which comes just weeks before the album drops, is a mix of offbeat synths, sharp guitars, and…rap.
The track’s lyrical focus is on time and the band’s ever-expanding thoughts on the concept. According to Henry Dartnall, the song’s lead singer and guitarist, “The main problem is that time seems to be kind of illusory. Anything outside of the present moment is basically just a thought. And the present moment doesn’t seem to pass – it is always the present moment.” You’re not wrong, Henry – things do feel a little wibbly when you start thinking about time too much.
Musically, Young Knives go all in with a few unexpected turns. Dartnall jokes, “The track is basically middle-aged white men rapping. I’m a huge Hip Hop fan, so it made sense to give it a go.” There’s something delightfully freeing about hearing a band that’s been around for years still pushing boundaries, especially with a track that might have you tapping your feet, but also making you scratch your head in the best way.
If you’ve followed the band, you’ll know their new album is all about big themes, particularly how we handle the idea of time, identity, and leaving a mark in this world. Dartnall says, “It’s a record about letting things go before they are taken from you. Embracing everything the world throws at you and not taking it to heart.”
After all, what’s the point of fighting the inevitable?
And if you need even more of Young Knives in your life, they’re also heading out on a UK tour this January and February. Expect to hear this new material live, along with some classics that’ll have you singing along.
