It’s only 45-seconds, but now I, too, am a little afraid. Unsurprisingly, based on the people behind Beau Is Afraid and what we know already just weeks from of its release – including that Joaquin Phoenix passed out on set – this looks intense. News of Phoenix fainting came as part of an April Fool’s day prank by Ari Aster, when instead of showing audiences a screening of his previous film Midsommar, he instead unveiled his latest work at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in New York. On top of the Oscar-winning Phoenix, the movie stars Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zoe Lister-Jones, Armen Nahapetian, with Parker Posey and Michael Gandolfini, among others. The plot revolves around “a paranoid man [who] embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother.” Beau Is Afraid is by A24 and out in cinemas on 19 May in the UK.
