BPI reveals first wave of artists to receive BRIT Billion Award

The BPI has revealed the first recipients of the new BRIT Billion award, presented to those who’ve surpassed one billion career UK streams.

BRIT Billion Award

ABBA, Mariah Carey, AJ Tracey, Whitney Houston, Ellie Goulding and Lewis Capaldi are among those to receive the newly-established award.

Other awardees to make up the first 13 names include Coldplay, Headie One, Anne-Marie, George Ezra, Raye, Rita Ora and Sam Smith.

The BRIT Billion award is verified using Official Charts data and marks the first significant change to the certifications programme since April 2018, when the BPI Awards were re-branded to the BRIT Certified Awards.

The new award has also been released to mark the 50th anniversary of the awards certification, with BPI first establishing the programme in 1973.

The new classification has also been introduced, in many respects, to match up with more contemporary listening habits and artist’s output.

It will be the first time that the certifications scheme officially recognises an artist’s combined success across multiple projects, and will include tracks an artist has appeared on either as the principal performer or as a featured artist.

More BRIT Billion awarded artists who have surpassed the threshold will be announced in due course.

In 2022 there were a record 160 billion audio streams in the UK in total, with the format now accounting for more than 85% of the UK’s recorded music consumption.
