Cassandra Jenkins has announced her new album, My Light, My Destroyer, set to release on July 12 through her new label, Dead Oceans. The album promises an expansive sound palette blending indie rock, new age, sophistipop, and jazz influences.
My Light, My Destroyer is described by Jenkins as an exploration of the universe’s minute and massive elements, from quarks to quasars. The album combines field recordings with Jenkins’ poetic and evocative lyricism. “It’s about finding the edge of the new, with a wider sonic palette than ever before,” said Jenkins.
The lead single, ‘Only One,’ has been released alongside a video directed by Lydia Fine & Tony Blahd. The song encapsulates the theme of repetitious struggle, a concept Jenkins illustrates through lyrical metaphors and rich musical textures. “It’s about a Groundhog Day effect, finding yourself in the same situation over and over again,” Jenkins explains.

After contemplating ending her music career following her 2021 album, the response to her work reinvigorated Jenkins’ passion for music. “When that record came out, and people started to respond to what I had written, my plans to quit were foiled in the most unexpected, heartening, and generous way,” she recalls.
The album was produced with a close circle of collaborators and marks a departure from the solitude of her previous work. It features contributions from indie artists like Palehound’s El Kempner, Hand Habits’ Meg Duffy, and others.
The record release show is scheduled for July 11 at Public Records, a day before the album’s official launch.
