If you were in two minds about attending the BFI London Film Festival this year, we’ve got something to sway you.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is getting a flashy gala premiere at the festival. This will, without a doubt, be the hottest ticket at this year’s festival, a sequel 23 years in the making.

“What an honour to world premiere our film on home turf at the London Film Festival this year. Dawn of the Nugget showcases the amazing talent and ingenuity of the crew at Aardman backed by the enduring passion of the team at Netflix. We’ve poured everything we’ve got into making this a treat for both die-hard fans and the new generation of families discovering Chicken Run for the first time,” said the film’s director, Sam Fell.

Chicken Run, released all the way back in the year 2000, is the highest-grossing stop-motion animation ever. A sequel seemed inevitable but never materialised.

Until now.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget has a star-studded voice cast. Thandiwe Newton will voice Ginger and Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi will voice Rocky. The cast also includes Bella Ramsey, Imelda Staunton and Romesh Ranganathan.

“We are so excited to be sharing the magic and artistry of the Aardman studio and their favourite feathered friends with audiences this October with a film that’s brimming with fun and has such enormous heart,” festival director Kristy Matheson said.

Here’s a synopsis for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget: “Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk – this time, they’re breaking in!”

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will have its world premiere on 14 October at the Royal Festival Hall. There will also be simultaneous screenings happening all across the UK.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will premiere on Netflix on 15 December. The full BFI London Film Festival programme will be unveiled on 31 August.
