Babylon has a starry cast consisting of Brad Pitt, Tobey Maguire and Margot Robbie, but it looks like much of the action revolves around newcomer Diego Calva’s character. The new trailer showcases all the characters and their positions in Hollywood. Calva’s dreamer Manny Torres is a rising producer, while Pitt plays an established movie star, Jack. Margot Robbie’s Nellie is on the cusp of success, indulging in all the cocaine-fuelled parties that come with fame and fortune in Hollywood. Check out the wildly entertaining trailer below. Margot Robbie may very well be in the Oscars race, as is Chazelle as a director, and surely the newest film from Hollywood’s favourite boy wonder will be in the race for Best Picture. Chazelle was the youngest person to win Best Director at the Oscars for his film La La Land, when he was 32. Babylon has so far received a mixed reaction from critics. Some have praised the film’s inherent ambition and the performances, but its bloated runtime of three hours and eight minutes has received criticism, as well as the overall messiness of the narrative. The official synopsis reads: “From Damien Chazelle, BABYLON is an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva, with an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.” Babylon will raise the roof of our cinema screens on 20 January 2023.
