Dave and Central Cee have broken a record, with their track ‘Sprinter’ being the most-streamed track in a day on Spotify UK.
Released last Thursday, 1 June, the summer-fuelled tune ended up preceding a surprise debut EP, Split Decision, which dropped on 4 June – on Dave’s birthday, and the day before Central Cee’s. ‘Sprinter’ has so far accrued more than 20 million streams on Spotify, a week since its release. The first collaboration between the two UK rap stars also broke a record for being the most streamed hip-hop song in the UK in a single day in Spotify history. Given this momentum and popularity, the track is somewhat inevitable also on course to sprint towards the top of the singles charts. In whynow’s four-star review of Split Decision, Archie Brydon wrote of the track in question: “Sprinter’ is a hit… The two MCs are having fun, bragging about cars, clothes, women and money, yet it’s clear they’re both aware of the material nature of these pursuits, almost laughing at the young, rich, rapper stereotype while knowingly perpetuating it themselves. “Central Cee changing his flow at the end of the third verse and incorporating Rick Ross’s ‘Maybach Music’ is particularly impressive, and sees the West London native reference the perception of him being “stupid”, when, it becomes ever more evident, he is in fact a clever, thoughtful bloke.”
