Deadletter share new single ‘More Heat!’, a warning against self-deception

Deadletter returns with their signature art-punk sound in 'More Heat!', exploring self-deception and paving the way for their debut album Hysterical Strength.

Deadletter are back doing what they do best, paving the way for a solid runup to their forthcoming album Hysterical Strength, out on 13th September.

And what’s Deadletter’s best? Welding elastic basslines, scratchy and discordant guitars, and rasping saxophones. It’s all here in ‘More Heat!’ and it makes for a refreshing overview of the trap we all fall prey to sometimes: self-deception.

Deadletter’s lead Zac Lawrence explains this in full, saying that the band’s new single is “about the way in which someone may attempt to convince themself they are feeling enjoyment from something that in reality is causing them a disturbance.

“Whether is be to preserve face, or simply through an inability to swallow their pride and accept that a spell of discomfort as a result of change far outweighs continuously doing something from which there is no contentment to be found.”

Exactly as Albert Einstein’s (attributed) witticism outlines: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”. Deadletter have taken the dangers of hoodwinking oneself and turned it into a record of exploratory art-punk that brews malevolent atmospheres and searches darkened corridors for clarity amongst a roar of chaos.

It’s one of many themes on a debut album that is, according to Lawrence, about “being able to take something disgusting or disgraceful and make it sound nice through the power of music”.
