Television station WCCO in Minneapolis discovered video footage of a young Prince speaking during a teacher’s strike in April of 1970.

Prince was, and still is, an icon. The legend’s legacy is hard to summarise using just an assigned number of words, but it’s safe to say that the singer-songwriter’s work and essence touched many during his career, which spanned decades.

Turns out, Prince was just as iconic at the tender age of 11 as he was in his later years. In the video published by WCCO, Prince advocates for better pay for teachers, sweetly saying they deserve more money because “they’re working extra hours for us and all that stuff” with an infectious grin.

While the young boy does not identify himself in the footage, WCCO sought confirmation of his identity from Prince’s childhood friend Terrance Jackson, who immediately recognised Prince, or as he was called by at the time, Skipper.

“That is Prince! Standing right there with the hat on, right? That’s Skipper! Oh my God!”

The footage was discovered and restored as WCCO went through their archives as part of a story on educators’ strike happening the previous month.
