Henry Cavill is handing over the sword and wig of Geralt of Rivia after playing the gruff hero in three seasons of Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher. Based on a series of books and video games, The Witcher has been wildly successful and ahead of the third season, which premieres next summer, Netflix has renewed it for a fourth season with Liam Hemsworth in the lead role. In a statement about his departure, Cavill said: “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.” The news of Cavill’s departure broke over the weekend and already, fans aren’t happy. Cavill was recently confirmed to be returning to the world of superheroes after his cameo in Black Adam. Superman, the role which saw Cavill first don the cape in Man of Steel, has been largely absent from the DCEU, but Cavill’s return got an ecstatic response on social media. It does, however, come at a price as Cavill will most likely be too busy to commit to a series as big as The Witcher while maintaining his duties as one of the tentpole heroes of an entire studio. Hemsworth, younger brother of Thor himself Chris Hemsworth, is best known for his role in The Hunger Games franchise in which he played Jennifer Lawrence’s love interest and best friend. Hemsworth also commented on the news: “As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
