Montreal’s creative duo, Hildegard, comprised of Helena Deland and Ouri, is set to enchant listeners once again with their upcoming album Jour 1596, scheduled for release on 18 October via Chivi Chivi. This new project promises to showcase the duo’s evolving sound, starting with their latest single, ‘Cruel’.
Jour 1596 marks a significant shift in Hildegard’s musical journey. While their debut album was born from a spontaneous eight-day retreat in the serene landscapes of rural Québec, this latest effort has taken a painstaking 1,596 days to develop. Ouri and Helena have traded the quick bursts of creativity for a more reflective and intentional approach, allowing their artistry to flourish within the contours of friendship and collaboration.
The single ‘Cruel’ encapsulates the essence of the album, described by the artists as a “dialogue between lovers or friends.” They note how one party seeks stability while the other is drawn toward disruption and change. This interplay is brought to life through delicate harmonies and Ouri’s signature harp, creating a rich tapestry of sound that invites listeners into their world.
As the album takes shape, the duo welcomes contributions from several talented musicians, including Zach Frampton on piano, Christopher Edmondson on saxophone, Phil Melanson on drums, and Benja on guitar. Each track in Jour 1596 reflects the nuances of their experiences and influences, ultimately guiding the audience from deliberative moments to more delicate, upbeat tunes.
