Netflix has just released the first trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun, which stars Idris Elba as everyone’s favourite brooding ex-detective.

It’s been over four years since we last met DCI John Luther, played with grit by Idris Elba in his own series. At the end of series five, Luther was arrested and sent to prison.

Of course, prison bars aren’t enough to keep Luther locked up, as we see from the first trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun.

Take a look at the trailer below.

As we can see from the action-packed trailer, Luther breaks out of prison to hunt down Andy Serkis’ villain, who boasts quite the hairdo. Luther is both hunter and the hunted as Cynthia Erivo’s character closes in on him, determined to lock Luther back up again.

The official synopsis confirms this: “In the epic continuation of the award-winning television saga, reimagined for film, a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath, who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.”

Elba has been a fan favourite to be cast as the new James Bond, but it looks like John Luther is as close as we get.

Original Luther creator Neil Cross has written the script for The Fallen Sun, and Jamie Payne is on directing duties. Joining Elba, Erivo, and Serkis is Dermot Crowley, reprising his role as Martin Schenk from the series.

Luther: The Fallen Sun will be released in cinemas on February 24, before streaming on Netflix on March 10.
