Jo From School shares new single ‘Weight’ ahead of debut EP Grace, Flair & Distance on 7th August

Jo From School has shared new single ‘Weight’, the final preview of her debut EP Grace, Flair & Distance, out 7th August via Chess Club Records.

Jo Geller, 22 and from North London, began writing songs at the piano aged nine and graduated from the BRIT School before signing to Chess Club Records, whose alumni include Wolf Alice, Billie Marten, Jungle and Mumford & Sons. The label recently entered a global distribution partnership with Virgin Music Group. She has built early momentum through support slots with Daffo, TTSSFU and Skullcrusher, a Bird On The Wire residency at the Greyhound in Peckham, and two singles: debut ‘Chicken’, produced by Hugo M. Hardy, and ‘Julia Roberts’, which began as a misheard lyric and took its title from a brief encounter on the London underground.

‘Weight’ is produced by Rich Cooper, whose credits include CMAT and Billie Marten, and was the track on the EP that came closest to not being finished. Geller began it and stalled. It was Cooper who pushed her to continue. “This one was unique in that it was hard to keep writing, but Rich knew it could be something,” she has said. “We understood that there was a fine line between supporting the songwriting and overdressing the song to a point where the rawness is covered up and lost. It was the first time he pushed for me to continue with an idea. It’s a soft and heavy song, and my favourite to play live.”

The accompanying live clip was filmed by Geller’s sister Grace on a family holiday in Wales. The EP title itself comes from a game invented by Geller’s father.
