July Blockbuster Cinema Guide

What could be better than grabbing a bucket of popcorn and sitting down in a cinema? Here's our guide to the best blockbusters out in July.

July Blockbuster Guide

July is known for being the sweatiest and most uncomfortable of months as we all stew in our own juices on the Central Line. So what could be better than grabbing a ginormous bucket of popcorn and sitting down in a dark, air-conditioned cinema to watch one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes or a Jane Austen adaptation? Here’s our guide to the best blockbusters out in July.

Minions: The Rise of Gru / July 1

Minions the rise of gru

They’re back! The yellow, pill-capsule looking creatures with a language of their own and a passion for bananas, are taking over cinemas once again. After a successful solo outing in 2015, they’re getting their own sequel now, but worry not, Steve Carrell’s Gru is also back. It’s silly and it’s for kids, but it’ll certainly tickle your funny bone.

Thor: Love and Thunder / July 7

Thor_ Love and Thunder

The God of Thunder returns to our screens and he’s feeling rather melancholic and philosophical. After Taika Waititi completely transformed how we see Thor with Thor: Ragnarok, we can expect Waititi once again to blow our minds with Love and Thunder as Thor looks to be done with the superhero business. Oh, and Natalie Portman returns as Mighty Thor!

Persuasion / July 8

Persuasion

If you’re sick of things going boom on the big screen, may we recommend a new take on Jane Austen’s last completed novel. Dakota Johnson stars as Anne Elliot, a rather Bridget Jones -eaque heroine, at least if we can believe the trailer. Persuasion will stream on Netflix a little later in July, but we suspect this might be quite a treat on the big screen.

The Gray Man / July 15

The Gray Man

The Gray Man is July’s big, serious action film. Helmed by The Russo Brothers – the ones who blew the roof off with their Avengers films – The Gray Man stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. The two of the potentially most attractive men alive play a pair of assassins going head to head. The film includes such corker lines as “You wanna make an omelette, you gotta kill some people,” which is worth the price of admission alone.

Where The Crawdads Sing / July 22

Where the crawdads sing

Starring Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones, Where The Crawdads Sing is July’s second book adaptation. Based on a novel by Delia Owens, Where The Crawdads Sing takes place in the atmospheric marshes of North Carolina. Part murder mystery, part coming-of-age film and part courtroom drama, Owens’ film has us intrigued already!

DC League of Super Pets – July 29

League of Super Pets

July also offers us yet another Dwayne Johnson-Kevin Hart team-up, this time in animated form. We’ve all heard of the Justice League but in Jared Stern and Sam Levine’s film, it’s the superheroes’ pets that are front and centre of the action. Superman’s dog Krypto (voiced by Johnson) teams up with other super pets in order to save his owner. We trust that Johnson and Hart are as funny animated as they are in real life.
