Ever since the bubblegum pink-tinted first images of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie arrived, we’ve been dying to see even a glimpse of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu in action.
Plot details are still scarce, but the first teaser trailer gives us a full look at Robbie as the titular Mattel toy and Gosling and Liu as Kens.

The trailer puts emphasis on Barbie being the first doll for girls that represented women instead of the usual baby dolls girls were given. The trailer also heavily parodies Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
There will be multiple Kens in the film, including the future Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa and Kingsley Ben-Adir, along with Gosling and Liu, creating a wonderfully inclusive and diverse roster of what could be called perfect men.
The trailer also suggests the film might be a musical as Simu Liu’s Ken is clearly in a dance number, and we see Robbie also part of one.
We’re also calling Barbie an early contender for multiple Oscars in 2024, especially for costume and production design. The trailer gives only a brief glimpse into these, but we already adore the aesthetic of Gerwig’s next film.
Barbie is in cinemas on 21 July 2023, when it will face Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer in the ultimate battle for bums on seats.
