Brann Dailor lost his mother and his bandmate of 25 years in the same year. Marrow Deep is how Mastodon processed both.

Mastodon have announced their ninth studio album Marrow Deep, due 28th August via Loma Vista Recordings, alongside second single ‘Snakes For Dinner’ featuring Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age.

The album arrives as the band’s first without founding guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds, who left the group in early 2025 and died in a motorcycle accident in August of that year. Drummer Brann Dailor also lost his mother, Michele Lawrence, in the same period. Marrow Deep was born from both bereavements. The album’s conceptual framework centres on the Three Fates of Greek mythology, who determine every mortal’s life through a fragile thread that, when cut, brings death. “Brent was our family, someone we all loved wholeheartedly,” the band have said in a statement accompanying the release of their short documentary The Mastodon In The Room. “Losing him has meant sitting with a type of grief we never expected. No more hugs, no more high fives, no more disagreements, no more making up. That part has been hard. It’s real.”

The album was co-produced at the band’s own West End Sound studio in Atlanta with Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, and features Nick Johnston on guitar and João Nogueira on keys as full members for the first time.

First single ‘Your Ghost Again’, released in June, was written directly from Dailor’s experience of grief in the studio. “I kept seeing Brent out of the corner of my eye, to my right, just where he always stood,” Dailor has said. ‘Snakes For Dinner’, the album’s second single, marks Josh Homme’s first collaboration with Mastodon since ‘Colony Of Birchmen’ on 2006’s Blood Mountain. Troy Sanders, Dailor and Kelliher have said of the record: “Bill, Brann, and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we’ve got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us.”

A North American headline tour, the Poisonous Weapons Tour, follows the album’s release with Deafheaven and Alcest in support.
