Mokina has released new single ‘Fool’, the first taste of her forthcoming debut album, Jardim Celeste.

The Montreal-born, Portugal-based artist takes the song’s title from the Tarot deck, where the Fool card represents innocence and the start of a journey, that weightless early stage of a relationship when everything still feels possible. Running just two minutes and 28 seconds, the track was made with longtime collaborator and producer Jeremy Lachance, built from layered guitars, soft synths, lo-fi drums and stacked vocal harmonies. Mokina has said she was surprised the song became the single at all, calling its original demo one of the least convincing on the record, and crediting the team around her, including Lachance, for shaping it into something she felt confident releasing.

The accompanying video was made with cinematographer Magda Benda, photographer Denize Egger and dancer and stylist Sofia Flemantino, put together on a limited budget but built around a shared willingness to follow the idea wherever it led.

Jardim Celeste offers a broader platform for Mokina’s airy, often beatific songwriting, building on her five-track EP, Mirage, which picked up support from Under the Radar, The Line of Best Fit and Ones to Watch on its release last year.

‘Fool’ is out now.
