It’s almost surprising there aren’t more films or TV programmes made about one of the most famous footballers in the world. David Beckham has dominated the pitch as well as the tabloid covers over the years, but we’re now being treated to a new, intimate series on him and his life.

The series will be helmed by Fisher Stevens and John Battsek, both very good people. You might recognise Stevens as he’s also a popular actor, currently appearing in HBO’s Succession, but he’s also won himself an Oscar for producing the highly-acclaimed documentary The Cove in 2009.

Stevens also directed the Justin Timberlake-starring Palmer last year. Battsek similarly has an Oscar in his back pocket from Searching For Sugarman, which won Best Documentary in 2013.

According to a press release from Netflix, the new series will “feature a mixture of never-before-seen personal archive footage from the last forty years and interviews with David Beckham, his family and friends, and key figures who have been part of his journey both on and off the pitch.”

Netflix has been working on a documentary about Beckham for a few years now, with Variety reporting of the footballer’s £16 million deal with Netflix in 2020.

The new three-part series is currently in production and will focus on “Beckham’s humble working class beginnings in East London, and the drive and determination that led him to become one of the most recognisable and scrutinised athletes of all time.”

Beckham’s own Studio 99 is producing along with Battsek’s Ventureland and, of course, Netflix is on board.
