Nintendo has shared its financial report for the last financial year. Overall, things weren’t too good as almost every year-on-year figure was down – most concerningly hardware sales were down 20%.

However, the Switch family – Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED – has sold 107million units, surpassing the Nintendo Wii, which has sold 101.6million units.

The Switch originally launched in 2017 and became particularly popular with players during the pandemic, by those stuck inside who turned to games such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons to pass the time. The decline in sales could be explained by the slow return to a sense of normality after the pandemic showed signs of slowing down.

Due to the chip shortages affecting all gaming consoles, Nintendo is lowering their expectations for next year. They’re now predicting they’ll sell 21 million Switch units, although they’ve sold 23 million in the last year. A decline in manufacturing is therefore being expected.
