Will Smith took home the Best Actor award in a controversial awards night, which also saw the actor slap Chris Rock in the face for insulting his wife.
Elsewhere, CODA took home the award for Best Picture – becoming the first streaming-only film to win the award – whilst Jessica Chastain won Best Actress.
With much talk recently being about the tedium of awards nights, this was certainly one people won’t forget in a hurry. After Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith took to the stage to slap him. The Academy Awards later issued an apology, saying it “does not condone violence of any form”.
Pinkett Smith’s shaved hairdo – saying, “Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2” – Will Smith walked up on-stage and slapped him, before sitting back down and shouting: “Keep my wife’s name out of your… mouth.”
The Academy does not condone violence of any form.
Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.

Many had thought the impromptu moment was a comic stunt. To top it all off, Will Smith then went on to win the award for Best Actor, his first ever Oscar, for his role as the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard.
“I want to apologise to the Academy. I want to apologise to my all my fellow nominees,” Smith said in his speech, referring to the earlier incident.”
“Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.”
The event largely overshadowed some other more celebratory moments. CODA picked up the award for Best Picture, beating the favourite The Power of the Dog. Jane Campion, however, did scoop the award for Best Director, making it the first ever consecutive win for female directors at the Oscars.
Troy Kotsur became the first male deaf performer to win an Oscar, whilst Sir Kenneth Branagh also finally got his hand on one, winning Best Screenplay for Belfast. Branagh had previously been nominated for seven different categories throughout his career.
Ariana DeBose also won Best Supporting Actress – the first time the same role has won an Oscar on two occasions, after Rita Morenon won the same award also for playing Anita in West Side Story in 1962.
