Sega Bodega has released his new live EP, Live & Altared.
The release documents a one-off performance at Christ Church Spitalfields, titled “I Brought You to the Church to Watch Me Play My Ambient Album by the Altar,” staged on June 2nd as part of SXSW London’s Spatial Audio Showcase. The show made direct use of the church’s own acoustics and spatial audio system, built around material from his album, I Created the Universe So That Life Could Create a Language So Complex, Just to Say How Much I Love You. The title plays on the church’s altar and the idea of altering music through performance, blurring the line between the space’s religious setting and electronic sound, and between the live show and its recording.
All five tracks were recorded from that single performance. Live & Altared brings together reimaginings of Sega’s existing material alongside two previously unheard pieces, with guest appearances from KUKII on ‘True’, Ludo Pear on ‘Deer Teeth’, and Mayah Alkhateri, who also performs alongside Sega Bodega as part of Kiss Facility, on ‘Prayer at the Dinner Table’. ‘Deer Teeth’ was shared ahead of the EP as a preview. Alongside the release, a visual document based on the performance has also been made available.
Sega Bodega, the Irish-Chilean producer Salvador Navarrete, is also co-head and founder of record label and collective Nuxxe.
Live & Altared is out now.
