The Wombats have dropped their latest single, ‘Can’t Say No’, giving fans a final taste of their upcoming album Oh! The Ocean, due 14th February. The track dives into impulsive escapades, with frontman Murph detailing a self-destructive streak that will feel all too familiar to anyone who’s ever said, “Why not?” and immediately regretted it.
“We’d rather run away than feel at all,” sings Murph, spinning tales of car theft, demon worship, and general chaos. Speaking about the track, Murph says, “‘Can’t Say No’ would be my favourite on the album. I kind of wanted it to sound like the three of us playing in a room together if that room was in space. The song is about making decisions that in no way benefit my future self, and in fact cause my future self a lot of problems.”
The single is a bold teaser for what the band is calling their “most sonically adventurous album yet,” created during six weeks of sessions in Echo Park, LA, with producer John Congleton (St Vincent, Death Cab for Cutie).
Murph, now armed with a fresh perspective following a revelatory seaside trip, says the album grapples with big internal questions. “Why are my head and body disconnected all the time? Why am I incapable of seeing beauty in the world or others?” Expect Oh! The Ocean to deliver plenty of introspection, wrapped in The Wombats’ signature mix of cathartic, danceable indie rock.
Two years after their first UK #1 album, Fix Yourself, Not the World, The Wombats are set to make 2025 their biggest year yet. A UK and European tour kicks off in March, with arena stops across the country and a landmark show at Liverpool’s Pier Head in June. Fans can expect a nostalgic ride through the band’s 20-year career alongside fresh tracks from Oh! The Ocean.
