Fremantle, BMG, and WhyNow Studios are thrilled to announce our latest venture, Rebel Country, a feature documentary that promises to lift the lid on the evolving, thriving genre of country music.

Set to premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival in the Spotlight+ category, the film promises a fresh perspective on the genre’s dynamic changes.

Directed by Francis Whately, known for his work on documentaries about David Bowie and Dolly Parton, and executive produced by BMG, WhyNow founder Gabriel Jagger, and Janet Lee, Rebel Country examines the ongoing transformations within country music through the lens of race, class, gender, and more.

The film highlights the genre’s connection to its rebellious roots in Nashville and features prominent artists such as Jelly Roll, Blanco Brown, Lainey Wilson, and Breland, among others.

Francis Whately expressed his enthusiasm about the project: “I am excited to have Rebel Country premiere in this current moment that the country music genre is experiencing. The musicians, noted music journalists, and historians included in the film help give a broad picture of the genre and its influences over the years and a glimpse into the future.

“Through archival footage and exclusive performances filmed in cinematic locations we are able to uncover and explore decades of music, celebrating the rebels from past and present.”

Rebel Country will also showcase exclusive performances and delve into the stories of artists who are reshaping country music. These include Grammy-nominated rapper-turned-country singer Jelly Roll, Blanco Brown, whose hit ‘The Git Up’ went viral globally, and Breland, who burst onto the scene with ‘My Truck’.

The documentary is a part of Fremantle’s ongoing commitment to amplifying local stories on a global scale and continues their tradition of producing compelling content across various genres.
