Basht have shared new single ‘Kids vs. Guns’, the latest song taken from their upcoming debut album, Poor Advice, out October 9th.
The track follows recent singles ‘Terror TV’, ‘Keira Knightley’ and ‘Perfume’, trading the fast post-punk of those earlier releases for tumbling guitar riffs and impassioned vocals on what the band have called the most direct statement on the record. Vocalist and guitarist Jack Leavey has said the song began as a poem written in response to what he describes as the genocide in Palestine, calling it “the one sided conflict where innocent children are left in the direct firing line,” and naming it his favourite and proudest song on the album.
Basht have built a devoted following ahead of the album, touring with DEADLETTER, Everything Everything and Wunderhorse, and playing festivals including The Great Escape, Truck, Supersonic Block Party, Liverpool Sound City, Dot to Dot, Live at Leeds and Other Voices. Poor Advice was produced by Ali Chant, whose credits include Dry Cleaning, Perfume Genius and PJ Harvey.
Leavey has described Poor Advice as a concept album tracing the relationship between power and those crushed beneath it, mapping the history of church and state in Ireland, where guilt, silence and obedience shaped a generation, before pulling that same thread into the present through the military industrial complex. The album’s title, he’s said, reflects the counsel handed down from above: keep your head down, say your prayers, trust the deal.
