Succession comes to a close on Monday (29 May) for good as we, hopefully, finally find out which of the Roy kids succeeds their father, Logan Roy after his death earlier in the season.

Logan perished in the third episode of season 4, blindsiding most viewers. His death was sudden and traumatic and the entire episode was a masterclass in great TV writing.

Brian Cox, whose performance as Logan has been acclaimed since season 1, opened up about being written out of the popular HBO drama.

“I was fine with it ultimately, but I did feel a little bit rejected. You know, I felt a little bit, oh, all the work I’ve done and finally I’m going to, you know, end up as an ear on a carpet of a plane,” Cox told BBC’s Amol Rajan

Cox did say he thought Logan’s death was handled “pretty brilliantly” and the viewers agreed. The episode, titled “Connor’s Wedding”, has been hailed as one of the best episodes of TV ever.

Cox seems to still harbour some hopes that he might return to the role that has won him many Emmys.

“I still believe this, maybe Logan isn’t dead,” Cox said in the interview. “This could be part of an elaborate ruse to find out. Well, if you think about it, from Logan’s point of view, he has to find out, how are his children going to behave when he dies, what will then happen? And the only way to do that is to fake his death and actually, at some distant point he’s observing the chaos that is following.”

We’re 99% sure Logan is, in fact, dead as the penultimate episode “Church and State” revolved around his funeral and the grief finally caught up with Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall gave a powerful eulogy in Roman’s place.

Cox has been submitted for awards consideration, namely the Emmys, for his role as Logan. Culkin has also been submitted in the same category, Lead Actor Drama, which caused some controversy. Many critics and audiences felt this is Culkin’s strongest work yet, but he won’t be successful in the Lead Actor category whereas he might have been if submitted for Supporting Actor.

The series finale of Succession airs on Sky Atlantic on Monday at 2.00 and at 21.00.
