After a whirlwind few years that have seen them rise to prominence, Divorce are kicking off 2025 with their latest single, ‘Pill’, a track as adventurous as it is emotionally raw. Taken from their forthcoming debut album Drive to Goldenhammer (out 7th March 2025 via Gravity/Capitol), the single showcases the Nottingham-based band’s knack for bending genres and crafting deeply personal narratives.
“‘Pill’ was written on not my piano at not my flat in not my city; Glasgow to be specific,” says co-vocalist and guitarist Tiger Cohen-Towell. “It’s about sexual awakenings and the absolute thrill of feeling seen properly. It’s also about a long-term long-distance relationship that turned my life upside down (and continues to), and my relationship with a new place alongside that. It’s one of the queerest songs on the record.”
Sonically, ‘Pill’ is a wild ride. Across its five minutes, the song effortlessly juggles tender piano interludes, swelling alt-country moments, and crashing climaxes, offering a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come from Drive to Goldenhammer. It’s this playful and boundary-pushing approach to songwriting that has become Divorce’s hallmark. “From the get-go I wanted it to have three very different sections,” Tiger continues, “and the rest of the band trusted that instinct.”
The album promises to be a deeply personal exploration of home and transformation. Written and demoed across four seasonal stays in rural North Yorkshire, Drive to Goldenhammer captures the warmth and chaos of life on the road while planting roots in Divorce’s post-industrial Midlands identity. Produced by Catherine Marks (known for her work with boygenius and Wolf Alice), the record is an ambitious blend of indie rock, country, folk, and chamber pop.
Tiger sums it up: “This album pays homage to seeking place and home; one of the great human levellers. Much of life feels at odds with this particular need. And to Goldenhammer; you are a reason to keep driving. We will find you again and again!”
