Dog Unit, the London-based quartet known for their post-rock sound, have surprised fans today with a new release: an acoustic EP titled At Home, Still.
Available via Brace Yourself Records, the EP reimagines tracks from their debut album At Home, stripping them of electric instrumentation while maintaining the elaborate layers fans have come to expect.
Rather than simply going “unplugged,” Dog Unit has reworked their songs entirely, bringing in instruments like the flugelhorn, harmonium, and even a string quartet. The EP was born out of a question: what would Dog Unit sound like without their usual electric backline? The answer is an EP that combines the band’s post-rock origins with a more folky, acoustic vibe. Guitarist Sam Walton said, “When you typically hear acoustic versions, it’s a fairly quick hit of novelty value… but we wanted to use the creative restrictions to expose the different layers of melody and harmony.”

The reworking of these tracks is far from lazy. Walton went on to explain how the raw recordings were then layered with orchestral instruments, including haunting bass clarinet lines and string arrangements by noted composer Scott McLaughlin. “It was cathartic to exorcise every musical ghost from them,” Walton added, reflecting on the satisfaction of digging into the songs one final time before moving on to their next album.
At Home, Still follows the release of Dog Unit’s debut album At Home, which received glowing reviews across the board, including 4-star ratings from The Times and MOJO. Fans can catch the band on tour this autumn across the UK and Europe, with shows kicking off tomorrow.
