Flat Party have returned with a bang, dropping their latest single ‘Shotgun’, an ode to hedonism that’s sure to stir the indie rock scene. Out now on Submarine Cat Records, this track heralds the arrival of their forthcoming EP, following the success of their debut self-titled EP released in January. The band is set to celebrate with a single launch this Friday, 26th July, at Windmill Brixton in London.

Flat Party, a six-piece outfit known for their flamboyant, humorous, and emotionally complex performances, have built a reputation as one of the most electrifying live acts in the country. With tours supporting acts like English Teacher, Courting, Opus Kink, FEET, and Goat Girl, they’ve played to rousing, sold-out crowds nationwide.

Frontman Jack Lawther delivers ‘Shotgun’ with a self-deprecating swagger, amidst 80’s-inspired, riff-laden grooves. He describes the single as “an ode to hedonism, but it’s also full of self-loathing and anxiety.” Reflecting on the inspiration behind the lyrics, Lawther shares, “There’s a lyric in there based on a quote I read that was ‘The sun never sets on the British Empire, because even God couldn’t trust the English in the dark’. I thought that was brilliant.” He humorously admits that ‘Shotgun’ was written quickly as a jab at the ubiquitous cowbell-punk bands.

Drummer and video director Zander Hearn adds, “Set in the depths of purgatory, the video is a peek into the surreal world surrounding the release. We tried to keep the performances fun while the moody interiors and mysterious characters allude to the darker backstory behind it.”

Influenced by a diverse range of artists from Big Star and Suede to Japanese Breakfast and David Bowie, Flat Party’s music is rooted in escapism, yet their future vision is ambitious and expansive. Lawther notes, “In comparison to the subtle optimism of our debut EP, ‘Shotgun’ and the new songs we’ve been working on are dark, hedonistic, and dramatic. Sonically, it’s all a lot more intense than the first EP.”

With accolades from outlets like NME, CLASH, DIY, and The Line of Best Fit, and radio support from BBC 6 Music and Radio X, Flat Party are just getting started.
