Golden Globes, back on telly this year after a controversy-led hiatus, gave us a good idea of who might win big at the Oscars this year, but there were some surprises along the way. Check out the full list of winners here.
It was a night of glamour and surprises. No one really knew if the Golden Globes, organised by the controversial Hollywood Foreign Press Association, could bounce back from the accusations against it.Â
Brendan Fraser, nominated for his moving performance for The Whale, boycotted the ceremony completely. He has accused the former head of the HFPA, Philip Berk, of groping him in 2003, and Berk has since been removed from his duties.Â
Fraser lost out on the Golden Globe for Best Actor in Drama to Austin Butler for his impressive performance as the King of Rock’n’Roll in Elvis. Butler generated a lot of buzz when the film premiered last summer, but since then, Fraser has been seen as the frontrunner for all the major awards.Â
Steven Spielberg took home Best Director as Best Film (Drama) for his autobiographical drama The Fabelmans. Martin McDonagh’s screenplay for The Banshees of Inisherin was named the best of its kind, and the film was also named Best Film (Musical or Comedy). Colin Farrell was also named Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) for his role in Banshees.Â
One could argue the profoundly devastating and bleak Banshees is not, in fact, a comedy or a musical, nor is Elvis more a drama than it is a musical. Still, the Golden Globes, often referred to as the Academy Awards’ drunken cousin, loves to mix it up a little.Â
Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh both won Best Actress in their respective categories for Tár and Everything Everywhere All At Once. This means the two women are neck-to-neck in the Oscars race, and it’s impossible to tell which will take home the most significant award in the film industry in March.Â
Angela Bassett won Best Supporting Actress in any film for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This bodes well for Bassett for the Oscars; the first Black Panther film was the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture. Can Wakanda Forever repeat its predecessor’s awards success?Â
Over on TV, House of the Dragon won Best TV Drama, while Abbott Elementary was named Best TV musical or comedy. Zendaya won Best Actress for TV Drama for her portrayal of the troubled Rue in HBO’s Euphoria, while Jeremy Allen White was named Best Actor for The Bear.Â
