Holly Macve is back with some delightful news: her new album Wonderland is set for release on 27th September via her own label, Loving Memory Records. Alongside this announcement, she’s released a new single, ‘San Fran Honey’, giving us a taste of what’s to come.
‘San Fran Honey’ is a serene and atmospheric track that showcases Holly’s velvety vocals over dreamy pop instrumentation. The song reflects a sense of acceptance and wisdom as Macve reminisces about a past love. “It’s about a love that never came into full fruition,” she shares. “Someone I think of from my past, who I was so drawn to, but looking back I’m so glad that nothing ever happened between us because the magic was never lost. I guess you maintain a fantasy version of them, but the reality is that you know damn well they would have been so bad for you.”
Wonderland marks Holly’s first album in three years and signifies a fresh start for the Galway-born, Yorkshire-raised artist. Taking full control of her creative output, she co-produced part of the 12-track release alongside Dan Rothman of London Grammar. The album features contributions from her trusted collaborators, including sound engineer Beatrice Balagna and strings expert David Saunders.
The journey to creating Wonderland was transformative for Holly. A pivotal moment came when she was involved in a car accident in Los Angeles’ Coldwater Canyon. Miraculously unharmed, she walked away with a new outlook on life. “When you go through experiences like that, it gives you a whole new perspective on life,” she reflects.
Adding to this period of change, Holly ended a long-term relationship and sought solace in California, hoping to rediscover herself. The result is an album filled with renewed purpose and hope. Releasing the record through her own label, Macve feels particularly connected to this project. “I think that Wonderland is meant to represent the next chapter in my life, which is me being unashamedly myself and just appreciating being alive,” she elaborates.
Born in Western Ireland, Holly moved to West Yorkshire with her mother and sister to escape an abusive relationship when she was just six months old. Growing up, she cultivated a deep love for music and film. Now, three albums into her career, Holly Macve has truly found her sound. Her recent Time is Forever EP received acclaim from outlets like Rolling Stone, which named it ‘Album of the Week’.
Fans can catch Holly at various festivals across the UK this summer, including Latitude and Haldern Pop.
