The Ivors Academy has announced the nominees for its annual awards, which recognises British and Irish songwriters. They’re normally a good barometer of the health of songwriting on these shores – and this year is no exception.
Following huge success at the BRITs and Grammys, Harry Styles is among those leading the pack this year, with three alongside his frequent collaborator and ‘As It Was’ co-writer Kid Harpoon.
Also on three nominations is Dean Josiah Cover, better known as ‘Inflo’. The somewhat mysterious producer has been recognised for his work on both Little Simz’ superb No Thank You album and his work with the collective SAULT.
Fellow SAULT associate Cleo Sol (full name Cleopatra Nikolic) is also up for three awards.
Elsewhere, Alex Turner is up for a gong, for his songwriting on Arctic Monkeys’ latest, relatively divisive album The Car.
Raye is up for Best Contemporary Song, for her 070 Shake-featuring hit ‘Escapism’, the lead single from the independent singer’s debut album My 21st Century Blues.
Irish outfit Fontaines D.C., meanwhile, will be hoping to follow up on their BRIT win (International Group of the Year) with Best Album at the Ivors. We chose their nominated record Skinty Fia as our number one album of last year, so we wish them all the best.
Victoria Canal is also among those hoping to win the Rising Star award. But enough waffle, here’s the full list of nominations, the winners for which will be announced at the ceremony on 18 May.
