July Indie Cinema Guide

If the God of Thunder is invoking only frustrated groans, we’ve got you covered still. Here’s the best of indie cinema in the month of July.

July Indie Guide

Nitram / July 1

Nitram

Nitram isn’t for the faint of heart. Caleb Landry Jones plays the titular Nitram, who is based on Martin Bryant, and the film chronicles the events leading up to one of Australia’s worst massacres, the 1996 Port Arthur Massacre. Justin Kurzel’s film is impressive and bleak, one that’ll haunt you for a long time after the credits roll.

Brian and Charles / July 8

If Nitram proves to be a bit heavy, fear not, because the award-winning Brian and Charles arrives only a week later as a soothing salve. A lovely inventor played by David Earl builds a robot out of a washing machine to be his best friend. This one is sweet and rib-tickling funny, so the perfect antidote for reality.

McEnroe / July 15

mcenroe

McEnroe is one of two superb documentaries premiering in July. Set over just one night in New York City, McEnroe features dynamic tennis superstar John McEnroe going down memory lane, recalling his fame, fortune and career. Expect many appearances by other tennis players in this documentary by Barney Douglas.

The Good Boss / July 15

THE GOOD BOSS

Javier Bardem plays a deliciously charismatic factory owner with an evil side in this Spanish comedy. Bardem’s Julio Blanco takes matters into his own hands and starts meddling with the lives of his employees in order to win an award for business excellence and will stop at nothing to come out on top.

She Will / July 22

She will

No month is complete without a healthy injection of the macabre. Alice Kirge plays an aging actress who goes to the Scottish countryside to recover from a double mastectomy. She soon discovers that she’s able to enact revenge through her dreams and she certainly has a bone to pick with people from her past, especially Malcolm McDowell’s Hathbourne.

Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time / July 22

KURT VONNEGUT: UNSTUCK IN TIME

Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time is a film four decades in the making. Directed by Robert B. Weide and Don Argott, the film not only recounts Vonnegut’s fascinating life but his friendship with Weide. This is a real treat to the fans of Vonnegut’s writing and a chance to see the acclaimed author from a much more intimate perspective.
