As the month of May rolls around, a host of show’s come to the West End to commence their summer run. From fresh adaptations of classics, such as My Fair Lady and The Glass Menagerie, to the diverse new comedy, two Palestinians go dogging, find our full list of new theatre below. 


Julius Caesar | Globe

3 May 2022 – 10 September 2022

The new Julius Caesar comes to the Globe this summer, as part of the venue’s 25th anniversary selection. The Caesar name. Diane Page is directing, entrusted with Shakespeare’s classic for a modern-day audience, and is said to bring “a sense of revolution and cunning to the play.”

Grease The Musical | Dominion

May 2022 – 29 October 2022

Grease the musical

I’m not fully sure what the non-musical version of Grease would entail, but Grease The Musical is coming to the Dominion on May 3. The story, seen world-over in film, was in fact a stage performance first. It’s getting another run this summer in London.

Now here’s a name for a play. In case you need some clarification, the show’s bio explains: 

“‘Your hobbies are limited to Arab Idol and cooking lentils and having sex in fields late at night.’” The year is 2043, and Reem and her husband Sayeed are here to share a ‘Serious Play about Palestine’. Things are tense. People are on the edge. The Fifth Intifada is right around the corner. But on a contested piece of land near their village of Beit al-Qadir, this couple is about to go dogging. Don’t worry, you’re allowed to laugh.” 

My Fair Lady | London Coliseum

7 May 2022 – 27 August 2022

The new stage adaptation of My Fair Lady is crossing the pond and arriving at the West End this month, after its success on Broadway. With a reinterpreted ending of Eliza Dootlitte’s famous tale – itself an adaptation of Pygmalion – the performance at the London Coliseum will likely attract hordes during its run on the West End this summer. 

La Clique | Underbelly Cavendish Square

13 May 2022 – 3 Jul 2022

Cabaret show La Clique is coming back to London this summer, on show at the Underbelly. Having first appeared at the Edinburgh Festival in 2004, La Clique has since travelled world over and before coming back to the UK next month.

Henry VIII | Globe Theatre

19 May 2022 – 21 Oct 2022

 

Another at the Globe in its 25th year, and another about a famous ruler. While arguably England’s most famous king is the titular subject, this adaptation promises to explore what the many women in his life thought of his decisions. “In Henry VIII London performances, Henry’s wives fight for justice and change in a paternalistic world where speaking out is unheard of.”

The Glass Menagerie | Duke of York’s Theatre

23 May 2022 – 27 Aug 2022

Amy Adams is making her West End debut in this adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ classic. Adams will play Amanda Wingfield, a polio sufferer who’s story is told through the eyes of her son, Tom. Paul Hilton and Tom Glynn-Carney will share the role of Tom, with director Jeremy Herrin wanting to explore Tom’s fragmented character.
