Halcyon Studios are producing the biopic, the Hollywood Reporter announced, after it optioned Daphne Barak’s book ‘Saving Amy’, which was released in 2010.

Halcyon Studio CEO David Ellender said in a statement: “Our team is honoured to be working on this project. Although her career was cut far too short, Amy was the voice of a generation and we look forward to telling her story in the most poignant way possible.”

Barak’s book was based on over 40 hours of footage and testimony she sourced in the final three years of Winehouse’s life.

Winehouse died in July 2011 when she was just 27 years-old. An inquiry ruled the singer had passed away due to alcohol poisoning.

In July, another documentary on the singer was released — Reclaiming Amy — which was made as a tribute to mark the tenth anniversary of Winehouse’s death.

Another documentary was also made in 2015 by filmmaker Asif Kapadia, who has also produced other biopics including on Ayrton Sennna and Diego Maradonna. The film, titled Amy, won the ‘Best Documentary’ award at the 69th BAFTAs.

Winehouse’s father, Mitch, has hinted that a new posthumous album could also be released.

‘Lioness: Hidden Treasures’, a compilation album, was released in December 2011 following the singer’s passing.

He told the BBC: “We’ve found a few bits and pieces but it’s difficult because the CDs are a bit corrupted,” he says, “but apparently we’ve been told we might be able to rescue something.”

“It might not be as good as Back to Black but from what I’ve heard, from the snippets that we might be able to rescue, it’s good.”
