Phoebe Green has never been one to hold back. Whether it’s her brutally honest lyrics or her refusal to be boxed in by expectations, she’s made a name for herself as one of the UK’s most compelling voices.

Now, she’s taking full control with her new EP, The Container, written, recorded, and produced largely on her own turf. It’s out 21st March, with a headline tour to follow in April.

And because waiting is overrated, she’s also dropped a brand-new single, “What Are You Doing”, out today.

There was no high-end studio, no team of co-writers – just Green, her flat in Manchester, her childhood home in Lytham St Annes, and a whole lot of emotions to sift through. “It’s been so freeing to go back to recording in my bedroom and writing out of a sheer need to express myself,” she explains.

‘What Are You Doing’ is what happens when the dust settles on a toxic relationship and you’re left with nothing but lingering questions. Over shadowy synths, Green wrestles with self-doubt and curiosity: “Do you watch me from a distance?”

“It’s about mourning a pretty toxic relationship,” she says. “Looking back, I can see how damaging it was, but at the time, it felt thrilling and all-consuming. Now that it’s so far in the past, it’s impossible not to wonder – do I still take up space in their mind?”

Green isn’t just writing about reclaiming control – she’s living it. “I think our technical limitations can play a part in what makes us unique,” she says. “My lack of embarrassment these days about doing everything by ear has really shaped the way these songs sound.”

She’s also having fun with pop structures, playing with influences from Imogen Heap, St Vincent, and Caroline Rose. “I think I’ve subconsciously shied away from writing big pop choruses in the past, but I really loved experimenting with this on this new EP.”

With The Container dropping in March, Green is hitting the road soon after, with gigs in Leeds, Bristol, London, Manchester, and Brighton. Tickets are on sale now.
