Gregory Doran has been with the company for over 35 years, but is now stepping down from his duties as artistic director.

Doran took over as artistic director from Michael Boyd in 2012 and will continue to serve as artistic director emeritus until 2023. Doran originally joined Royal Shakespeare Company as an actor in 1987, before becoming an assistant director in 1989.

Some of Doran’s career highlights at the RSC include King Lear in 2016, in which his late husband Sir Anthony Sher played the titular role, and Richard II starring David Tennant, which went on to become the first ever RSC performance seen in cinemas around the world.

Of his work, Doran said: “We have made many strides in making our theatre more inclusive, accessible, diverse and accountable, but there is always more to do and I wish whoever succeeds me joy in continuing that work.”

Doran also called it “a real privilege” to work for RSC. He will begin rehearsals for Richard III next week.

Erica Whyman, who has been acting artistic director since September 2021 will continue in the role while RSC looks to appoint a new, permanent artistic director. Applications for the role open April 29.
