Temperatures are expected to hit 40 degrees Celsius on Monday and Tuesday, so why not cool down in a cinema if you’re a redhead?
As the UK basks in an unprecedented heatwave, some have it worse than others. Redheads are often more sensitive to heat and sunburn for reasons which are too scientific for me to explain here, but a UK cinema chain is thankfully coming to their rescue.
Showcase cinemas are offering free tickets to anyone with red hair on Monday and Tuesday, when the heatwave is supposed to be at its worst. Temperatures are expected to soar up to 40 degrees Celsius or even beyond in a situation that saw the Met Office issue a Red Extreme Heat warning for the first time. The Met Office is predicting that we will easily break 2019’s heat record of 38.7C which was recorded in Cambridge.
“While the UK enjoys some much-needed sunny weather, we know how hard some people find the heat” said Mark Barlow, Showcase Cinemas’ UK general manager.

“That’s why, to tackle the heatwave, we’re offering redheads free entry to our cinema screens this Monday and Tuesday, so they’ll be able to enjoy some of the amazing films on offer in the comfort of our air-conditioned cinema screens and ensure they stay protected from the sun.”
Elsewhere, Nintendo has warned against using their Switch console in temperatures higher than 35C. Although our own Simon Brew joked about throwing the Switch on a barbecue, it does now seem that Switch consoles will simply be turning themselves off when the heat hits today.
If you’re ginger, we fully endorse seeking out your local Showcase cinema for a free ticket to watch Minions, Thor or perhaps Elvis. If you’re not ginger, drink plenty of water, stay inside and fire up your favourite streaming service to keep your mind off the weather.
