The lengthy new orchestral piece, which clocks in at more than seven minutes in length, also comes with an eerie new animated video depicting a barren wasteland.

The video was directed by Johan Renck, director of the HBO miniseries Chernobyl, who’s spoken of some of the themes depicted in the video, saying: “I feel as nihilistic as one could regarding the future. We are powerless against our own stupidities.

“Some aspects of this came to merge with my impressions of the themes of ‘Blóðberg’. The music becoming a score to my own miserable thoughts, giving them beauty as only music can.”

If you’re drawn to end-of-days bleakness, then, and fancy listening to the new Sigur Rós track, have a watch of the video below.

The release of the new single precedes the band’s showing at Royal Festival Hall this Friday, 16 June, as part of Christine and the Queens’ curated edition of the annual Meltdown festival.

The track is the first Sigur Rós offering in a decade to feature multi-instrumentalist Kjartan Sveinsson back in the fold, who left the band in 2012, and also of course has the distinctive vocals of frontman Jónsi.
