The Idol lit the Croisette on fire during the Cannes Film Festival. Premiering the first two episodes (out of a total of six), Sam Levinson’s TV show got a 5-minute standing ovation, but the critics weren’t feeling quite as kind.

The Idol is currently sitting at 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, with many calling the show “gross” or “toxic”.

Regardless, it now has a proper, full trailer which you can watch below.

The full synopsis reads: “After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?”

Rolling Stone published a pretty damning investigation into The Idol’s production. In it, multiple crew members described the production as toxic. Tesfaye, formerly known as The Weeknd, was said to have demanded rewrites after the show adopted too much of a female perspective.

That being said, there is plenty of focus on Lily-Rose Depp’s scantily clothed body in the new trailer. She even smacks her own butt!

The Idol premieres on Sky next week so we won’t know until then what Levinson, the creator of Euphoria, has cooked up for us, but one thing is for certain: The Idol has created just enough controversy to guarantee everyone’s attention.

The Idol will air exclusively on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW from 5 June.
