London’s own rising star, Sophie May, has just released her latest single ‘Just Want You’, giving fans a tantalizing preview of her upcoming EP, Deep Sea Creatures, set to drop on 26th July. The new track, which is the final teaser from the EP, showcases Sophie’s knack for blending melodic folk pop with lyrical depth.
Sophie will be hitting the stage at London’s Camden Assembly on 24th July for a sold-out headline show, just days before the EP’s release. Additionally, she will be joining Searows on tour later this year.
Speaking about the single, Sophie shares, “‘Just Want You’ was my attempt at capturing the overwhelming feeling of being truly in love with someone. I often find myself feeling bombarded by the neverending life lessons that are thrown at me. I go through waves of feeling helpless after staring at my phone too long, watching the news and the state of the world. In those moments of vulnerability, I always seem to long for the one person that makes it all feel okay, and wanting nothing else but them.”
Deep Sea Creatures, produced by Chloe Kraemer (known for her work with The Japanese House and Wet Leg) and Matt Maltese, follows Sophie’s acclaimed EP Worst Thoughts In The World. Earlier this year, Sophie shared ‘No More Birthdays’, a track initially written for the sequel to Aardman Animations’ Chicken Run. This song skyrocketed on TikTok, amassing over four million views and nearly two million Spotify streams.
Reflecting on her new EP, Sophie says, “My third EP Deep Sea Creatures includes 5 tracks that were predominantly written from my bedroom over the past year. Each song leans into all things existential, varying from the overwhelming size of our solar system to the inability to escape your own thoughts. I feel as though these songs are a good representation of the most important factors of my life, my biggest fears, biggest loves, and the appreciation I have for the world around me.”
Sophie’s career has been on a steady rise, marked by performances at major festivals such as Latitude, Reeperbahn, and Pitchfork Festival in Paris. She also supported Dublin band Inhaler at the Roundhouse and was selected by Rae Morris for a curated show at Groucho.
Across her previous EPs, Sophie has garnered praise from major outlets like The Sunday Times Culture, The Observer, The Independent, and NME. Her captivating songwriting and magnetic voice have also earned her support from BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders and BBC Radio 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq.
With a dedicated online following, Sophie has caught the attention of stars like Billie Eilish, Florence Pugh, and Joy Crookes. She boasts 500k monthly listeners on Spotify and over 220k followers on TikTok, where she was featured in their ‘Unsigned’ campaign.
For those looking to catch Sophie live, she’ll be touring Europe later this year, supporting Searows. Her tour dates include stops in Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Bristol, Manchester, Dublin, Glasgow, Leeds, London, Brighton, Berlin, and Warsaw.
