After 2020’s black-and-white Orson Wellian drama Mank proved a pretty divisive departure from the norm for David Fincher, it looks like he’s heading right back to his mock hyper-masculine, Fight Club roots with the trailer for his next film.

In case the title left any room for doubt, The Killer sees Michael Fassbender star as an assassin for-hire – one who, not unlike Fincher himself, isn’t that keen on improvising.

Check out the The Killer trailer below:

Beginning with an egregious waste of consumer electronics, as Fassbender takes out his rage on a couple of smart phones and a laptop, the trailer’s voiceover provides a bit of insight into his character’s murderous mindset.

“Stick to the plan” and “Anticipate, don’t improvise” seem to be a couple of his favourite phrases. “Empathy is weakness” is another. If we didn’t know any better, we’d say this guy might not be the best bloke.

The Killer marks Fincher’s second cinematic collaboration with Netflix after the aforementioned Mank in 2020, and comes after the confirmed cancellation of his acclaimed series Mindhunter earlier this year. Fassbender, meanwhile, is returning to screens following an unexpected stint as a racing driver, which has taken over acting as his focus since 2017. The last film we saw him in was the culmination of Fox’s X-Men franchise, Dark Phoenix, in 2019.

The Killer arrives on Netflix on 10 November, but before then it’s playing as a Headline Gala at the BFI London Film Festival: check out the full lineup here.
