The annual Golden Globes will once again be televised in January, but the ceremony isn’t without controversy. Brendan Fraser, nominated for his incredible performance in The Whale, has said he will not attend the ceremony if nominated. Fraser was all but shunned from Hollywood after he accused Philip Berk, head of Golden Globes organising body the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), of groping him. Berk was expelled from HFPA in 2021 after sharing an article which described Black Lives Matter as “a racist hate group”. While the nominations include exactly the films you’d expect, Danielle Deadwyler, critically acclaimed for her vulnerable performance in Till, has been snubbed. Deadwyler had been a steady favourite to sweep in her category, Best Actress, across all award ceremonies but this snub throws that into chaos. While we weren’t fans of Elvis, it seems to have kept its momentum as it’s nominated for Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Actor (Drama) and Best Director. It’s questionable whether the film – a biopic of Elvis Presley – should have competed in the Musical or Comedy categories instead of Drama at the Golden Globes. Angela Bassett has managed to get herself onto the Best Supporting Actress category for her powerful performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and there was also a lot of love for Everything Everywhere All At Once, which is nominated in 6 major categories, including Best Directing.
