Jin of BTS reportedly enlisting in military service next month

Jin, of the boyband BTS, will enlist for mandatory military service in his native South Korea next month, reports claim.

The band’s label, Big Hit Music, issued a brief statement saying the reports were “difficult to confirm”.

According to South Korean law, all able-bodied men over the age of 18 are required to serve in the military for up to two years, and the superstardom of BTS is not enough to grant its members an exemption.

Big Hit Music is a subsidiary of the entertainment company HYBE, who announced last month that all seven of BTS’ members would fulfil their military duties.

It is expected all seven will have completed their military service and be discharged by 2025, when BTS would reconvene. At 29 years-old, Jin is the band’s eldest member, and would be the first to enlist on 13 December.

That date was reported earlier today by a series of South Korean news outlets. Yonhap News Agency and KBS News both cited unnamed military sources in giving the 13 December date for Jin’s enlistment.

The Big Hit Music statement in response said: “It is difficult to confirm. We ask for your generous understanding.”
