Meta has banned Andrew Tate from its Instagram and Facebook platforms for violating its policies.
Andrew Tate, a former kickboxer, had gained millions of followers on social media in recent months, where he posted controversial lifestyle advice, widely deemed misogynistic.
Tate first rose to fame in 2016 after being removed from TV show Big Brother, after a video emerged showing him attacking a woman.
He then gradually gained notoriety online. He said women “belonged” to the men they were in relationships with, and Twitter banned him for saying women should “bear responsibility” for being sexually assaulted.
In June, Tate had around a million followers on Instagram. That number had risen to 4.7 million at the time of Meta banning him.
Meta announced Tate was banned for violating policies on dangerous organisations and individuals, however they did not provide any further details. Tate is yet to publicly comment.
In recent weeks, pressure has mounted on social media platforms to take action against Tate. Joe Mulhall, director of research at UK advocacy group
Hope Not Hate, said to the BBC that Mr Tate
“poses a genuine threat to young men, radicalising them towards extremism.
