The Weeknd becomes first artist in history to hit 100 million monthly Spotify listeners

The Weeknd has broken a Spotify record, by becoming the first artist on the platform to hit 100 million monthly listeners.

The Canadian megastar also, perhaps unsurprisingly, holds the record for the most-played song of all time, with his 2020 track ‘Blinding Lights’ having amassed over 3.4 billion streams.

The track surpassed the number of streams for Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape Of You’ on Spotify at the start of the year, with the two songs being the only two currently having over 3 billion on the platform.

More recently, a remix of the track ‘Die For You’, featuring Ariana Grande, received a healthy Spotify boost after going viral on TikTok. Originally released in 2016 as part of the album Starboy, it initially charted at 74 but entered the Top 40 last week.

To put The Weeknd’s latest 100-million-a-month listenership on Spotify into perspective, the next highest is Miley Cyrus, who has almost 20 million listeners less a month, with 82.5 million. Taylor Swift currently comes in a close third with 80.33 million.

With five albums to his name, including last year’s Dawn FM, it seems The Weeknd is officially the king of Spotify.
