British punk band Idles have launched their latest single ‘Pop Pop Pop’, featured on their number one album Tangk (listen here). The song is currently making waves for its unique blend of dark, hip-hop-tinged rhythms with an unexpectedly upbeat lyricism.

Released amidst their 2024 global tour, ‘Pop Pop Pop’ stands out in the album for its departure from the band’s typical sound, merging grim undertones with bursts of joy. Lead vocalist Joe Talbot describes the track as deeply personal, reflecting on family dynamics and the profound emotions of parenthood.

“It’s a song about the beauty of having a kid and understanding how lucky you are to have a kid. And there’s a sense of a cycle when you have a child, when you’ve lost a parent and a child. I have a very huge sense of gratitude and weight behind being a parent because of what I’ve lost. I’m not saying I’m a better parent, or more connected because of that. But for me, I’m more connected than I would have been, I think, because of what I’ve lost. I’ve learned a sense of just joy from seeing her joy. And I think that’s amazing. And powerful. And I’m very grateful,” Talbot explained.

Idles are set to continue their tour in North America next month, featuring sold-out shows in major cities. The tour includes a headline spot at Glastonbury’s Other Stage in June. With autumn performances across the UK and Ireland nearly fully booked, the band has confirmed an array of special guests at various concerts, from Angelica Garcia to Willie J Healey.

The band’s success with Tangk follows a series of critically acclaimed releases, hailed for their radical honesty and emotional depth. Idles’ current tour will also take them to New Zealand, Australia, and Japan in early 2025.
