Madonna has joined forces with digital artist Beeple to create three rather graphic NFTs showing her giving birth to nature.
The New York Times reports the project is titled Mother of Creation and proceeds from the sales will go to three non-profit organisations supporting women and children.
All of the works are based on a 3D scan of Madonna, her private parts being more finely rendered than the rest of her body, in particular her face. In the first NFT, she is giving birth to a tree in a lab. In the second, she births butterflies into a crumbling city. The third shows Madonna giving birth to mechanical centipedes in a garden.
Beeple is one of the world’s most financially successful living artists, with his digital collage ‘Everydays: The First 5000 Days’ selling for $69.3 million in March 2021. Until October 2020, Beeple had not sold a work for over $100. His stratospheric rise is the clearest personal success story from the recent NFT craze.
“I wanted to investigate the concept of creation, not only the way a child enters the world through a woman’s vagina, but also the way an artist gives birth to creativity,” said Madonna of the new project.
In a joint press statement, Mother of Creation was described as, “a labour of love, a year in the making—both artists partnered to connect to the idea of creation and motherhood as told through this visual medium. The works explore the concept of birth via darkness and light in our modern world.”
The three charities are: The Voices of Children Foundation, supporting women and children affected by war in Ukraine since 2015; The City of Joy, working to provide a community for female survivors of violence in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo; and Black Mama’s Bail Out, a non-profit based in Tennessee.
