Martin Scorsese’s new film will be another religious epic “about Jesus”

Legendary director Martin Scorsese met Pope Francis over the weekend and announced he’s making a new film "about Jesus" next.

Scorsese last explored the theme of religion in his 2017 film Silence, a passion project which had been years in the making. Scorsese also directed 1988’s controversial The Last Temptation of Christ.

As reported by Variety, the director is in Italy following the successful world premiere of his new film Killers of the Flower Moon at Cannes.

Scorsese, a Catholic man who has long injected religious themes into his films, and his wife Helen Morris enjoyed a private audience with Pope Francis before holding a conference.

“I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus,” the director announced.

“And I’m about to start making it,” Scorsese added, sparking speculation this would be his next film.

The legendary director revealed nothing further on the project, presumably because he still has the entire press tour of Killers of the Flower Moon to get through.

Killers of the Flower Moon explores the real-life Osage county murders in the 1920s. The film reunites Scorsese with his long-time collaborators Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro.

Killers of the Flower Moon was met with rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival. It’ll surely make the rounds at other prestigious international film festivals before landing in UK cinemas next October and later to AppleTV+.
